Texas Soldier Patrick Edward Myers Pleads Guilty to Killing Friend While Trying to Cure Hiccups

| by

A Texas soldier pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter on Thursday after accidentally shooting his friend, Isaac Lawrence Young, in the head while attempting to scare away his hiccups.

Patrick Edward Myers, of Spartanburg, S.C., was sentenced to three and a half years in military prison, had his rank dropped down to private and will receive a bad-conduct discharge. Myers fatally shot Young while the two were watching a football game in an apartment. It is believed that alcohol was involved.

According to the police report, when authorities arrived on the scene “they found a male suffering from a gunshot wound to his face and two other males at the residence.” Prior to their arrival, “one of the males produced a handgun and, while handling it in an unsafe manner, discharged the handgun, striking the victim in the face.”

Although the incident was accidental, it is hardly defensible, especially for a soldier who should have theoretically understood the ramifications of using firearms. Myers told police he thought the weapon had dummy rounds and was trying to scare his friend so that his hiccups would stop. Why someone would ever think that putting a gun to someone else's head as a joke is a good idea is unclear.

The call about the shooting came in at 10:04 p.m. Emergency personnel arrived and found Young bleeding profusely. He was quickly taken to Skylark Field, where he was to be airlifted to Scott & White Hospital, but he died on the way and was pronounced dead shortly after 11 p.m.

Young was a decorated soldier and was just 22 years old.
