Texas Man Leaves Babies in Car to Shop for Guns

A Texas man has punched his ticket for the Worst Father of the Year award after leaving his two babies locked in a car so he could shop for guns.

Houston's KHOU-TV reports that the man, whose name was not released, left the 18-month-old girl and five-month-old boy in his mini-van in the parking lot of the gun shop in Katy, Texas Saturday morning.

After about a half an hour someone heard them screaming from the car. The window was halfway down, but the kids were reported to be hot and sweaty. Temperatures outside were in the mid-70s.

"At this point we thought that they actually abandoned the kids," said shop owner Jeremy Alcede. "I said, ‘Oh my God,’ we asked everybody in the store. We thought times are tough and maybe they dropped them off in front of the gun store hoping someone would get them."

When no one claimed the children, Alcede went to his surveillance video and discovered that the father was still in the store, gazing at guns.

It turns out the children were in good shape. EMTs said they were not dehydrated. They were released into the custody of their mother.

The district attorney decided not to press charges despite a state law that prohibits children under the age of 14 from being left in a car unaccompanied. However the case has been referred to Child Protective Services for further investigation.
