Teen Accidentally Kills Himself While Taking Selfie

| by Robert Fowler

Deleon Alonso Smith, a 19-year-old from southwest Houston, Texas, accidentally killed himself while taking a gun-toting selfie at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 1.

Smith and his cousin were posing with a gun they found earlier that day for selfies and posting the pictures on social media. While his cousin was in another room in the house, Smith continued to take selfies when the gun suddenly went off, wounding him in the throat. He later died.

Investigators are still trying to determine how Smith and his cousin came into possession of the weapon.

The neighborhood and family thought he had a bright future. Smith, who had two children, was about to start college.

“It’s the worst feeling in my life,” his uncle, Eric Douglas, told Click 2 Houston.

“It’s a numb feeling,” said Smith’s grandmother, Alma Douglas. “It’s still unbelievable. Yesterday was my birthday and he came to wish me happy birthday, and now this kind of news.”

This is not the first time this year that taking selfies with a gun has backfired. In May, a 21-year-old woman from Russia survived an accidental gunshot to her head when she was snapping selfies with a firearm, Business Standard reports.

Smith would have spent his first day in college on Sept. 2.
