A scare in the parking lot before the Patriots-Giants game -- a tailgater accidentally shot himself in the leg.

The Boston Globe reports that the 50-year-old man was in his car with his wife when the gun went off about an hour before Sunday's game in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Boston Police Chief Edward O'Leary said the man, whose name was not released, was trying to empty the chamber of the licensed gun when it discharged. He was treated for his wound at a local hospital.

A Patriots spokesman said guns are not allowed inside Gillette Stadium, but there are no rules against guns in the parking lot.

Guns and stadiums have been a growing concern in recent months, with new laws in both Ohio and Wisconsin that technically allow guns into stadiums and arenas. However the laws give the operators of sports venues the right to continue to ban guns if they so desire. Almost all of them have done so.
