A burglary suspect in South Carolina was shot and killed by a homeowner in a wheelchair Thursday, after the two men exchanged gunfire.

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a friend of homeowner Orlandous Brown around 1 a.m. the morning of the shooting. Both Brown and the burglary suspect Darin Lowe, 26, were shot in the exchange, according to

Lowe had sustained several gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene, while Brown’s injuries appeared to be non-life threatening. Brown is in a wheelchair for cerebral palsy.

His neighbor, Latisha Vernon, said she did not see the shooting but she and her daughter both heard the gunshots before going into Brown’s home to find him and the armed suspect.

Some authorities think may not have been a random crime.

“We think there was a targeted issue here,” said Anderson County Sheriff John Skipper. “The individual had a conversation with the victim that was relayed to us and apparently he was looking for something like they had some kind of a connection there. So we don’t think there’s anything for the public to worry about.”

Police are still investigating the incident.
