S.C. Man Dies After Asking Friend to Shoot Him While Wearing Bulletproof Vest
A South Carolina woman accidentally shot and killed her friend when she missed his bulletproof vest and struck him in the heart.
26-year-old Blake Wardell of Anderson County reportedly asked his friend, Taylor Kelly, 18, to shoot him after he found an old vest during a gathering with other friends. Kelly obliged, firing a single round from a small-caliber handgun.
Unfortunately, her aim was just slightly off. The bullet went through the vest lining and into Wardell’s heart.
Authorities found the dead man lying in a garage around 2:45 a.m., according to Fox Carolina. Paramedics arrived and tried to revive him, but it was too late. Blood loss was named the official cause of death.
Investigators don’t think alcohol or drug use played a part in the incident.
Wardell’s death has been ruled a homicide.
According to his family, Wardell had a history of mental illness. His father wrote a last post to him on his Facebook page, the Daily Mail reports.
“You took the truth with you ill [sic] never know what happenbut when i got there i hope you heard me when i said i lopve [sic] u. i do,” James Wardell wrote.
On her own Facebook page, Kelly is shown in several pictures brandishing guns.
Kelly, a recent graduate of Belton Honea Path High School, faces up to five years in prison. She is being held at Anderson County jail with bond set at $10,000.
