Following a shooting on Monday at the Washington Navy Yard that left several people dead and many others injured, a top Russian official apparently felt the need to gloat about the incident on Twitter, BuzzFeed reported.

“A new shootout at Navy headquarters in Washington — a lone gunman and 7 corpses,” wrote Alexey Pushkov, Russia’s parliamentary foreign affairs chief. “Nobody’s even surprised anymore. A clear confirmation of ‘American exceptionalism.’”

He followed that up with another tweet: “The USA should part with the notion of American exceptionalism. It contradicts the principles of equal rights and smells of political racism.”

The exact number of casualties at the Navy Yard is unknown at this time. It has been reported that several people were killed and as many as 10 injured. It is also believed that the shooter has died.

Officials are looking into the possibility of another shooter being involved in the incident.

Pushkov’s tweet is a reference to a line in an Op-Ed published in the Sept. 11 issue of The New York Times written by Russian President Vladimir Putin. In the piece, Putin wrote that U.S. “exceptionalism” is dangerous for the international community.
