Rep. Ted Yoho Invites Kids to Gun Event on Dec. 14, Anniversary of Sandy Hook Shooting

Dec. 14, 2012 was the date of the second worst mass shooting in US history when 20 children and six adults were shot and killed by Adam Lanza at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Lanza also took out his mother and himself, bringing the total carnage to 28.

Now, for reasons unknown, Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Fla.) has decided to host a "Family Firearm Safety Event" this coming Saturday on Dec. 14 in Lake City, Fla.

"Please bring your family and kids for an educational event on gun safety, purchasing firearms, legal requirements and safety standards while encouraging responsible firearm ownership," reads a flier for the gun event, notes The Gainesville Sun.

During the event, gun instructors will discuss the proper use of firearms, safety equipment, gun locks and safes.

On Dec. 5, Rep. Yoho posted on his Facebook page:

Join us for a Family Firearm Safety event Saturday, December 14 at 2pm in Lake City. I encourage you to bring your family and friends. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Some people on Facebook were supportive, while others questioned the bizarre timing.

Rep. Yoho defended the date of the gun event on Facebook today:

The date was not chosen to coincide with the terrible tragedy at Sandy Hook, and my thoughts and prayers go to the victims and families. Gun safety education and responsible gun ownership are important topics that should be taught throughout the year, and this event is an opportunity to help my constituents learn about these incredibly important practices.
