Pro-gun advocates are furious at Austin City Council member Mike Martinez, who appeared at a gun control rally, 'Texas Rally for Gun Sense,' in Austin, Texas on April 7 (video below).
During Martinez's speech, he spotted a protester who goes by the name of "Texas George" holding up a "Stop the Gun Ban" sign and called him out, reported KHOU-TV.
"First of all, to the gentleman who is dying for attention, someone needs to inform him that there is no gun ban currently, but because of the work we’re doing here today, we will make your sign legitimate shortly, so you hang on to that," quipped Martinez.
In response, the pro-gun/right wing conspiracy web site InfoWars.com screamed the headline "Democrat Admits Obama Agenda Is Total Gun Ban," which Martinez did not say.
While the rally was in support of the Democrat's bill in Congress advocating universal background checks, Martinez never mentioned President Obama in his statement and is not a representative of the Obama administration.
InfoWars.com also falsely claimed: "Mike Martinez admitted during a speech that the Obama administration’s long term gun control agenda is focused on banning firearms altogether."
After the rally, KHOU-TV spoke to both sides on the debate.
"Passing more gun laws will not keep guns out of the hands of people that don't want to obey the law that are criminals, the very fact that they're criminals means they will ignore any laws," Texas George told KHOU-TV.
"Universal background checks make sense," said Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo. "It's not a political issue, it's a common sense issue. It is an issue that's not red or blue, the only red we're talking about is the blood of innocent people being spilled because we're not doing enough as Americans."
"Its time to speak up against people who are perpetrating things that are just not true," said Hilary Rand, with 'Moms Demand Action.' "Nobody wants to ban guns here we're just trying talking about coming up with sensible solutions that can help make us safer, we're talking about strengthening the laws that we currently have and creating new laws that will help us enforce those laws we currently have, nobody wants to change the constitution.
