One Intruder Dead, One in Critical Condition After Tenant Defends Himself with Shotgun

| by Lina Batarags

When two armed men reportedly shot their way into a Pittsburgh apartment, the tenant pulled out a shotgun and fired at the intruders.

The 19-year-old tenant, who lives in the apartment with his 17-year-old girlfriend, killed one of the intruders and critically injured the other.

According to Pittsburgh Police Safety spokeswoman Sonya Toler, at around 2:20 a.m. on Tuesday morning, police found the body of 31-year-old David Calhoun inside the apartment. Christopher A. Thomas, 27, was alive buy lying face down on the front steps of the apartment building with an abdominal bullet wound.

A handgun was lying nearby.

According to court records, Thomas is charged with felonies counts of aggravated assault, burglary, robbery, conspiracy and carrying a firearm without a license.

Thomas was also wanted on an arrest warrant from Pittsburgh police in connection to a rape that occurred in April.

The 19-year-old tenant told police that the men had shot into the door and pushed him into a bedroom, where they demanded “his stuff.”

At that point, he pulled out his gun and fired three times, hitting both men. Neither the tenant nor his girlfriend was injured.

As Toler said, “He was within his rights to have a shotgun in his residence.”

The tenant was taken away in handcuffs for questioning at Pittsburgh Police headquarters. Toler said that no charges will be filed against the resident.

As KDKA noted, neighbors said that the tenant and the two intruders knew each other.

Neighbor Clara Hicks, 66, said she wasn’t surprised by the shooting as “it’s a bad neighborhood – drugs.”

A third individual connected with the incident was believed to have sped away from the scene in a black truck. The truck was later found and the driver was taken into custody.

The shooting took place in the same neighborhood where a Hollywood movie, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams and 50 Cent, was being shot.
