Oklahoma City Grandfather Accidentally Shoots and Kills Himself

OKLAHOMA CITY – A grandfather who was babysitting his two grandchildren accidentally shot himself while placing his gun into his car.

He was apparently putting his shotgun into the trunk of his car to make sure it was kept out of the children’s reach, when the gun fired and killed him.

A neighbor heard the gunshot, called 911, and tried to give the man CPR, but was unable to revive the man. The man’s wife and grandchildren were all inside the house at the time of his death.

While authorities have dubbed the incident an accident and do not suspect foul play, the investigation is still ongoing. The victim’s name has not been released.

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control, more than 600 people died in 2010 from accidental shootings. Safety experts have recommended that firearm owners store and carry their weapons in a case to prevent gun-related accidents.
