New Photo of George Zimmerman’s Bloody Head Complicates Trayvon Martin Shooting Case

| by Alex Groberman

A new photo of a bloodied, hurt George Zimmerman in the moments after he shot Trayvon Martin is shining new light on what exactly happened in the pair’s deadly Feb. 26 confrontation.

Zimmerman, 28, was charged with second-degree murder last week for his role in Martin’s killing.

From the very beginning, Zimmerman -- a neighborhood watch volunteer -- acknowledged his part in Martin's death, but insisted that the shooting was motivated out of fear for his life. He maintained that the reason he was forced to fire on Martin was because the unarmed 17-year-old attacked him and repeatedly slammed his head into the concrete.

Up to this point, many doubted the validity of Zimmerman’s statements.

On Friday, though, Good Morning America released a photo that seemingly corroborates his version of what happened. In the photo, a hurt and scratched up Zimmerman can clearly be seen with blood from two small cuts trickling down the back of his head.

A lawyer for the Martin family was quick to dismiss the new photo as anything but significant.

"How bad could it have been if they didn't take him to the hospital didn't stitch him up," Benjamin Crump said in a statement to ABC News. "The special prosecutor has seen all the evidence and still believes George Zimmerman murdered Trayvon Martin.”

While it’s certainly debatable whether or not this photo vindicates Zimmerman in any way, it does speak to the broader issue of nobody knowing as much about this case as they pretend to on TV. Over the next few months, evidence just like this will continue to slowly but surely trickle out, and all of the people trying this case through the media will continue to look just as dumb as they do this morning.

Martin was killed because a guy disobeyed police orders. Nobody is denying that. A 17-year-old was killed because of the foolishness of a 28-year-old who should have known better. Nobody is denying that either. But every single time one of these fame-hungry media personalities stands up and smugly tries to act like they’re passing along facts when they know just as little as the rest of us, all they’re really doing is hurting the Martin family and their case.

At this point, the information needs to be allowed to emerge sans all the pundit commentary.

Zimmerman could face life in prison if convicted for second-degree murder.
