Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch reports that on 9-22-13, at approximately 09:23 AM, the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a gunshot wound victim at the Cass Lake Indian Health Services. Deputies arrived and found that a male, age 19, had been transported to the hospital and was being treated for a gunshot wound to the lower right leg. Investigation into the incident indicated that the hunters were duck hunting on the Leech River near Federal Dam and a hunting dog had jumped into the boat engaging the trigger on a shotgun causing the discharge. The injuries were reported as non life threatening. The incident remains under investigation; however no criminal charges are pending. The Cass County Sheriffs Office was assisted by the Leech Lake Tribal Police Dept.
It is unclear how many other hunters were in the boat.
