It was a crime that could have made the headlines of the national news. Two brothers, 20-year-old Jordan Kutach and 21-year-old Preston Kutach, broke into the homes of a yet-unnamed husband and wife and held the couple at gunpoint.

From there, the brothers forced the couple to load up into the couple’s pickup truck and drive to the nearby bank where the wife worked. They ordered the wife to withdraw a large sum of money while they held her husband hostage.

“We believe they had knowledge that she was an employee of the bank for them to be at the residence and to take her back,” said Sgt. Andrew Weido of the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office.

After the wife returned with the cash, the brothers forced the couple to drive the truck down a highway to an unknown location. Somehow, the husband was able to gain access to a gun that was stored inside the vehicle and shot at the two suspects.

Police eventually arrived on the scene to find both of the wounded brothers lying on the ground near the pickup truck. Jordan was airlifted to a hospital where he was in critical condition, while the other brother was pronounced dead.

It’s anybody’s guess what the brothers intended to do with the married couple, but it probably would have been a terrible ending to an already awful day.

“I’m sure that they’re both going to be upset for a while,” said Brenda Buehler, a nearby resident. “It’s a frightening thing to have happen, but I think everybody’s going to tell them good job.”

The bank president, Sam Kana, told reporters that he was thankful that the couple was not hurt.

“It’s very positive to a community to hear that the good guy does win in the end,” added Evan Mullins, another resident.
