Traverse City, Mich. resident Robert Caldwell pleaded guilty on Friday to shooting and killing his girlfriend in a botched suicide attempt.
Caldwell, 33, officially pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, discharge of a firearm while under the influence, felony firearm and resisting and obstructing police.
The incident took place on Nov. 19, 2013. Police were called to the couple’s apartment after Caldwell reported that he tried to commit suicide but “missed” and hit his girlfriend. He told police he was standing in a stairwell during the suicide attempt and that the bullet missed him and travelled up a staircase before hitting his girlfriend.
His girlfriend, Monica Anderson, was 28 at the time of her death.
Caldwell was not offered a plea deal by prosecutors. His attorney said he pleaded guilty to avoid causing his family any more suffering and pain. Caldwell will be sentenced on April 17, and he faces up to 17 years in prison.
