Police in Shreveport, La., have released the name of a teen that was fatally shot after an attempted robbery at a woman’s home this weekend.

The Shreveport Times reported that Elzie Pipkins, 63, shot and killed 16-year-old Devon Antonio Young, who police say barged into her home with a shotgun and demanded money out of a safe.

"And as I was unlocking the safe and I prayed to God to give me strength, to get through this, it'll be me or him," said Pipkins.

Once she opened it, Pipkins realized she only had coins in the safe and was scared for her own life, the life of her granddaughter and great-grandson.

“I did what any parent or loved one would do and that’s try to protect her own,” said Pipkins.

She said instinct just kicked in.

“And I said here you go, and he let go of one hand off his gun, because it was pointed right at me, and reached for the bag of coins, and that’s when I fired my gun, and hit him with the first round,” recalled the woman, who had never fired a gun before and had no previous firearms training, according to

The teen ran out of the house and police later found him with a gunshot wound in front of a neighbor’s house.

Young was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead after a short time.

“Fifty five dollars in coins, and he lost his life,” Pipkins told reporters, adding that her heart goes out to the teen’s family, and that she never intended to kill him.

Through the investigation, police found that Young had robbed the same woman a few weeks ago.

Pipkins is not being charged, and the investigation is ongoing, police say.
