Bill Gates recently promised a $100,000 grant to the person who could design the next generation of condom technology. It’s an amusing offer that has provoked more than a few jokes and giggles, but it is still nonetheless a noble cause. Gates lamented that there have not been any significant condom breakthroughs in the past 50 years. He added that condoms are effective at preventing dangerous sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies.
Joerg Sprave of the Slingshot Channel on Youtube responded to Gates’ challenge with a condom application device that it is equal parts amusing and terrifying. Once it’s properly cocked and loaded, this tool (or gun, or novelty item, or medieval torture device – whatever you want to call it) allows men with balls of steel to apply a condom at teeth-gritting speeds.
Sprave admits that the Condom Applicator Slingshot Gun (CASG) has a few weaknesses, such as poor accuracy and the fact that a misfire would have catastrophic consequences.
While this may seem like a ludicrous proposal, technically it fits within the requirements of the challenge. Gates’ challenge asks designers to come up with “[condom] attributes that increase ease-of-use” and designs that make the condom “easier to properly apply.” The challenge also asks applicants to apply “knowledge from other fields.”
Sprave ends the video with, “Dear Mr. and Mrs Gates, nothing fascinates male human beings more than guns and sex, so when we combine both you must see the huge potential this has. So come on, pass over the 100 grand and then we’ll make a product out of this.”
Getting Bill Gates to fork over $100,000 would be the easy part. The hard part would be finding men brave enough to put what is essentially a gigantic wooden mouse trap so close to their private parts.
