Tea Party-backed South Carolina State Sen. Lee Bright (R) claimed during a speech in August 2013 that the IRS was training an army of "Brownshirts" with assault weapons to enforce Obamacare.
Brownshirts used to be common phrase to describe Nazi storm troopers.
Bright was addressing the Lowcountry Republican Liberty Caucus of South Carolina, notes the Charleston City Paper (video below).
According to Mother Jones, Bright was recalling a story told by Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.) who claimed to see IRS agents training with AR-15 rifles in 2013.
“If that’s true, which I take him at his word, if that’s true and they’re doing assault weapons training, the Brownshirts are next,” Bright said. “Because that’s the enforcement group for Obamacare, is the IRS. If you don’t have an IRS, you don’t have Obamacare. That’s the mechanism that’s controlled our lives for far too long.”

Later, an audience member asked Bright about the conspiracy theory that the government agency FEMA was "training a militia."
"Most of the federal government is a scam," stated Bright. "FEMA is the biggest scam in the world."
Bright, who is running against Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), opposed state funding for rape-crisis centers and wanted to make it a crime to enforce Obamacare in South Carolina.
In 2013, Bright wrote a bill allowing South Carolina schools to offer gun training to kids.
"I believe the more guns we have the safer we are," Bright told WSOC.
