Terry York and his 12-year-old son Luke died on Sunday when York's AR-15 assault-style rifle accidentally fired, causing a fire and explosions in a room filled with ammunition.

Family members claim the tragic accident happened when York was in a back room of their Henderson County, Tennessee home, showing off his assault rifle to friends (video below).

After the gun fired, a small fire started, which didn't appear to be too dangerous at first, the family told WBBJ.

However, the fire quickly got out of control and turned fatal when Luke entered the room to help his dad put out the fire.

“Any loss of life is tragic, when a child looses their life it hit the community hard. There was maybe an accidental discharge of the weapon from there we haven’t really determined how the fire started but that is what State Bomb and Arson officials are looking into," said Henderson County Sheriff Brian Duke.

It's not clear why York stored so much ammunition in the room or whether he was some type of a survivalist.

The Tennessee State Bomb and Arson Investigators, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and Henderson County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the father-son deaths.
