An elderly California man says he ended up with a bruised nose after stopping what he thinks was an attempted home burglary by holding a suspect at gunpoint in his Hesperia neighborhood.

In a videotaped interview (shown below) with KCAL News, the 79-year-old man, who only wanted to be identified by his first name, Richard, said he saw the suspected burglar lurking around his neighbor’s home on Thursday afternoon.

Richard, 79, said he confronted the man and asked what he was doing.

“He said, ‘Well, my stuff is here,’” Richard told KCAL.

The suspect said he knew a man, named Steve, who lived in the house.

“I said, ‘No, he doesn’t. You just better be on your way,’” Richard recounted.

The suspect, who has since been identified as Steven Barnett, 25, by the Victor Valley News, is alleged to have then punched Richard in the nose after being told to lay on the ground.

Richard told KCAL the blow knocked him to the ground and knocked his glasses off his face.

The Hesperia man said Barnett hit him on the back about ten times but he just held a defensive position then pulled his gun out and hit Barnett on the foot. That’s when Barnett backed off, he said.

“If I run are you going to shoot or kill me?” Barnett asked, according to Richard.

“Go for it,” he said he told the suspect. “It was his choice not mine.”

Richard, who had called authorities before confronting Barnett, then held the alleged burglar at gunpoint until police arrived.

According to the Victor Valley News report, Barnett was booked into the High Desert Detention Center on charges of being under the influence and attempted burglary. KCAL reported the suspect was taken into custody and facing assault charges.

Richard, who was once in the military and said he always keeps a gun on him, was left with a bruise on his nose and said Barnett had just “picked on the wrong guy.”

“I’m not looking for any glory or anything. I just live in the neighborhood and want to be left alone,” he said.
