An off-duty Philadelphia police officer shot a man during an argument over dog waste on Saturday.

Just before noon the unidentified off-duty officer was outside his Lawncrest home, when he saw the man’s dog relieve himself on his lawn, police told ABC News.

The officer asked the man, whose name was not released, to pick up the waste, which led to an argument.

The man left with his dog and returned a short time later without the animal. He allegedly punched the officer in the face several times, pulling the officer’s hood over his head.

The officer drew his pistol from a holster on his hip and fired backwards, hitting the man in the right thigh.

The man was transported to Albert Einstein Medical Center where he was treated and released.

The officer was treated for facial lacerations and bruises at Jeanes Hospital.

An internal investigation was launched by the Philadelphia Police Department and the District Attorney’s office plans to review the incident.

The officer was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The man who started the fight will be charged with aggravated assault, ABC News reported.
