A 36-year-old Michigan man shot himself in the head in front of his girlfriend while giving her a lesson in gun safety.
“[The situation] is pretty unique, as I have never heard of anyone testing out the safety of a gun by pointing at their head and pulling the trigger,” said Independence Township Undersheriff Michael McCabe.
After spending most of the day drinking, the man started to demonstrate how his three handguns worked, his girlfriend told authorities. To show that they were empty, he put each to his head and pulled the trigger. The third was loaded.
The woman was performing CPR on the man when the police arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three children, not the victim’s, were at the home at the time. They did not witness the shooting.
The man’s death has been ruled a suicide pending further investigation.
On Dec. 30, another serious gun fumble occurred in nearby Harrison Township when labor leader General Holiefield accidentally shot his wife while cleaning loaded guns. His wife underwent surgery but survived. The United Auto Workers vice president is taking a leave of absence after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor charge of reckless use a firearm.
