D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier Provides Assault Weapons to Sen. Dianne Feinstein

Sen. Dianne Feinstein reportedly got her hands on “assault weapons,” which are illegal to possess in Washington, D.C., with the help of Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier. A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request unveiled that Chief Lanier had partisan and ideological reasons for going along with breaking the rules.

The obtained weapons were for a Jan. 24 news conference in the Senate building promoting a ban on these firearms. The news conference was held in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Chief Lanier then allegedly tried to cover up the police taking part in any of it, according to a report by the Washington Times.

On Dec. 24, 2012, Lobbyist Chuck DeWitt contacted Chief Lanier via email. “Sen. Feinstein has asked us to bring examples of assault weapons used in the worst incidents over the past few years,” DeWitt wrote.

Chief Lanier was told by the CEO of the Lafayette Group that the firearms would be used during Feinstein’s gun control arguments on Capitol Hill. A week after the request, Tom Mentzer, Feinstein’s press secretary asked the Crime Scene Investigation Division’s commander, Keith Williams for 10 gun models.

These guns included a Bushmaster XM-15, a Tech 9 handgun, Smith & Wesson M&P15, a Glock 19 with extended magazine, and more.

Chief Lanier said she was willing to help out Feinstein, but on the condition that the media cannot know about it.

Cmdr. Williams emailed Feinstein’s press secretary, saying the police would “prefer” there be “no mention of the fact that the weapons came from D.C. or were recovered by MPDC in the official language or speeches.”

“By not mentioning where the weapons came from, we open ourselves up to the same charge against David Gregory,” Mr. Mentzer replied.

Not all firearms, such as the M&P 15 and the Glock 19, were offered by the D.C. police. That’s where the Philadelphia Police Department attempted to bend the rules by delivering the illegal firearms into the District.

There were also emails and phone calls revealed by the FOIA of Chief Lanier trying to hide any connection that the DCPD and Philly PD broke the law. They are only delaying and not being cooperative with the FOIA.
