Dallas Police Shoot Mentally Ill Man Standing In Street (Video)

Family and friends of mentally ill man Bobby Gerald Bennett are demanding answers after a Dallas police officer shot him Monday for no apparent reason.

In a neighbor’s video surveillance camera recording, Bennett is seen sitting in a chair outside of his home, rolling back as officers approach him. Bennett stands up, but does not move — his hands remain by his side when Officer Cardan Spencer suddenly shoots him.

Spencer fires his weapon four times.

Though the video makes the scene clear, the police report states that instead of Bennett standing passively before the officers, he walked toward them aggressively with a knife.

“It’s not right,” said Joyce Jackson, Bennett’s mother. “My son did not do anything to those police officers.”

Spencer’s attorney Robert Rogers disagreed, stating that Spencer’s knowledge of facts and circumstances at the time justified his actions. He noted that there may be more to the incident than what is evident in the footage, though he was not at liberty to discuss it.

“It just didn’t happen that way,” Rogers said.

Bennett is currently recovering in the intensive care unit of a Dallas hospital.
