Dad Allegedly Left 11-Year-Old Home Alone With Loaded Gun

| by Sarah Fruchtnicht

A New Mexico man was charged with child endangerment after he allegedly left his 11-year-old daughter home alone with a loaded gun while he went to a tattoo shop.

John Ruiz, 41, was arrested Saturday after his neighbor called police to report a girl at the apartment complex’s pool carrying a gun.

The girl told police she is often left alone with the gun so she can protect herself in the event of a break-in. She said she isn’t supposed to take the gun out of the house, but that she had done so before and her father knew about it.

At the time, Ruiz was getting a tattoo on his head that read “In God I trust,” according to the Albuquerque Journal.

The girl also told police that the gun isn’t usually locked up in the home. She said her father usually leaves it on the counter or under his pillow.

Ruiz was bailed out of jail Sunday. His daughter is still in the state’s custody.
