A 28-year-old man, who was tormenting a San Diego neighborhood by smashing the windows of cars and attacking people with a knife and hammer, was stopped when a neighbor shot him in the back of the head.

On the evening of Nov. 5, the man suffered “some sort of a mental breakdown,” San Diego Police Department Sgt. David Jennings said, according to FOX 5.

“He was running around with a hammer beating on cars and arguing with neighbors,'' Officer Robert Heims said.

The man, who lives with his parents on the street where the incident occurred, chased neighbors with a knife and a hammer.

A police officer saw a young black couple drive by and pulled them over. What he did next left them stunned:

He caused damage to more than 10 cars, according to reports.

"He hit all three cars,” one neighbor, Keith Herrel, told CBS 8. "The red car is my son's car, my Corvette plus the Tahoe."

"He sees me,” resident Timothy Richard said in a CBS 8 report. "He goes ‘[D]o you want [a] piece of me[?]’ He took me off guard and I said what is wrong with this kid? Then he smashes the front of my car. I hope the kid gets some help. Obviously something flipped or freaked him out. The parents are devastated.”

One neighbor used his handgun to stop the suspect by shooting him in the back of the head.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening wounds.

He is expected to face felony charges once he is released from the hospital, reported CBS 8.

The neighbor who shot him was not taken into custody.
