Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel: Register all Guns in Illinois

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants every gun owner in Illinois register their weapon, as a way to combat illegal guns in his city.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the proposal to the state legislature would require people to register their guns, costing them $65, and renew that registration every five years.

“You already buy a title for a car. You already buy a title for a motorcycle. You buy a title for a boat. I’m not asking you to do anything you don’t do already," Emanuel said.

Gun advocates, though, disagree.

“It’s a civil right [to own a gun]. You don’t have to pay for a civil right. It’s like a poll tax,” said Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association.

The mayor said 56% of the guns used in Chicago crimes were purchased in Illinois but outside the city, leaving a “gaping hole” that criminals are exploiting.

“We need to close that hole, shut it down, so that the hard work of the law enforcement community, the hard work of our community groups, the hard work of our faith-based community, the hard work of our parents [doesn’t go to waste and] our laws are backing them up and keeping their kids safe, rather than making them more vulnerable,” Emanuel said.

A Republican state Representative is co-sponsoring the bill with the Democrat Emanuel in an effort for bi-partisan support.

You don't need to register a car or motorcycle unless you are going to drive it in public. Mere ownership and use on private property requires no registration.

But there is room to compromise. How about a bill which both requires firearms registration AND (like most other states) provides a shall-issue concealed handgun permit policy?

Wrong, jerk@@@. I dont see the RIGHT to bear a CAR mentioned in the Constitution.....OR a motorcyle or a boat. Youre NOT licensing MY right to bear arms as RECOGNIZED in the Constitution.

Gun registration does one thing...inconvenience the ONLY gun owners that AREN'T breaking the damned law to begin with.

These a@@head politicians dont give a rats @@@ about guns or crime. They only care about stroking the egos of the idiots who voted for them by trying to pass stupid laws that NO criminal is going to care about except that it helps him commit crimes more easily by DISARMING the helpless woman he's about to savagely rape and butcher.

The slow steady march is on. Don't kid yourself with I'll bury my guns so they can't find them. You might as well give them up now. Stand up, join groups that support our rights, NRA, JFP0, GOA. Be at least life members, get online and send e-mails, call on any legislation violating these rights. If you don't want to do these things now, if and when they pass the laws to take your and my firearms away when they come they will come with force sufficent enough to enforce the new law and order. TOO Late!!!!! NOW

I am in agreement. The day you think you should bury your guns is probably the same day you should have been digging them up. Remember the Constitution does not give you the right to bear arms, it insures that your right to bear arms is safe from the government while providing a measure to insure that the government remembers.

The greatest current problem is that we have a public indoctrination system, aka/public education, that is working every day to distort the truth.

The only purpose registration has is for future confiscation. Anywhere it has been accepted that has been the result. Neither confiscation nor registration has ever stopped a crime.

Instead of closing holes they should work on getting rid of laws that hinder our rights. Rahm just doesn't get it, violating the rights of honest people will never stop crime, in fact the opposite is true.

I still can't find any way to show a relationship between registering guns and preventing criminals from having guns unless you re-define criminal to mean your political opponents.

Now, that definition has always worked for every brutal dictator in history.
