'I'll Put The Gun Down When I See The Police' 80-Year-Old Woman Says After Scaring Off Burglars

An 80-year-old Florida woman scared off would-be burglars with a gun after they broke into her home last month, police said. But what has left some scratching their heads is why the 911 operator told the woman to put down her gun before the police arrived.

N.J. Logan was upstairs in her bed recovering from a recent hip surgery when she heard a commotion coming from the first floor of her home.

Originally she believed it was her husband coming home from playing bridge with friends but soon realized that was not the case.

“Once I realized it wasn't my husband, you have no idea how fast you can go,” Logan told Fox-13 of Tampa Bay.

“I don't know what was going on in my mind. Honestly all I wanted was my gun,” she said.

And once she grabbed it she began running down the stairs toward the intruders.

“I was probably running down the stairs with my new hip so to speak,” she recounted. “I didn't want to shoot. I really didn't want to have to shoot anybody.”

She said she was shouting out warnings that she would shoot anyone in the home as she ran.

The burglar or burglars ran off and Logan dialed 911. The operator told her she needed to put down her gun, but that was something Logan refused to do until she knew she was safe.

“When I called 911 she kept saying 'Put the gun down, put the gun down' and I said 'I'll put the gun down when I see the police,'” Logan said.

According to, Logan’s neighborhood has seen a few similar burglaries recently. The subsequent police investigation found that the suspect broke a glass door at the back of Logan’s house and then cut a screen to gain entry.

Logan told reporters she was not completely at ease after the frightening incident but did say that she felt a little better knowing she at least had the gun nearby.

Holmes Beach Police Chief William Tokajer agreed that in this case it was good Logan kept a gun in her home.

“I think it's a wake up call to any would-be burglar,” Tokajer said.

The police department is still looking for suspects in the case.
