A Florida man who killed himself almost took the life of an unsuspecting neighbor as well, authorities say.
Michael Bruty, 28, was arguing loudly with his girlfriend in front of their condo Wednesday when he threatened to kill himself, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.
His girlfriend told him not to do it, but Bruty put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger.
Bruty died at the scene, but the bullet passed through his head and managed to hit a woman who had just walked out to take a phone call, Newser reports.
Yvonne Diaz had asked her cousin, Jeane Sams, and Sams’ fiancé, Brandon Parker, over to her house. During their night of relaxation, pizza and movies, Sams decided to step out.
Soon after, those inside heard a gun shot ring out and then pounding on the door.
They opened the door and Sams collapsed to the floor, blood coming out of her leg.
While Parker rushed his kids upstairs, Diaz put pressure on the leg. There were three wounds, the enter and exit holes in Sams’ right leg and a bruise on her left leg, where the bullet managed to stop.
When the deputies arrived, Parker said he was almost arrested because they thought he shot Sams, that is, until they found the gun under Bruty’s body.
Deputies are not sure yet of the bullet’s trajectory, especially since there were two cars parked in the most direct path between where Bruty and Sams, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
Parker remember Bruty as a nice man and neighbor, noting the cookouts they had at the complex with their kids. Bruty had two daughters from one marriage and a son from a second.
“He was a good kid,” Bruty’s grandmother, Zoe Kostopoulos told the Tampa Bay Times. “He didn’t look like the suicidal type.”
Sams was rushed to the hospital and is expected to be released later this week.
