Bronx Man Fatally Shot In Head By Hecklers For Defending His Mother’s Singing

| by Sarah Fruchtnicht

A 24-year-old New York man was shot in the head last weekend after he told a group of young men not to insult his mother's singing.

Verbena Burgess was singing outside her South Bronx home on Morris Avenue around 9:30 p.m. Sunday night, when a group of young men approached her.

“She was singing,” a neighbor told the New York Daily News. “They came from across the street and started telling her, ‘Shut up, shut up.’ She said, ‘I’ll call the cops, or I’m going to ring the bell and get my sons.’ They told her, ‘Do it. Call the cops. Call your boys.’”

Burgess’ two sons came downstairs to confront the men, and the group eventually dispersed.

The group later returned and forced their way into the Burgess home.

Tony Burgess, 24, was shot in the head. He later died at Lincoln Hospital, according to the New York Police Department.

"He was always taking care of his mom," said neighbor Nancy Chase. "He stayed to himself. I never saw him outside."

"These kids got no respect, no honor," said another neighbor, who did not wish to be identified.

No immediate arrests were made.
