Bipartisan Group of Senators Think NSA May Have Created Illegal National Gun Registry

The popularity of the National Security Agency has plummeted following the news that the group has been illegally spying on Americans and foreign countries. As if that wasn’t already bad enough, a bipartisan group of 26 senators suspect that the NSA may have also created an illegal national database of gun owners.

A letter written by the group states that the Patriot Act “can be used to collect information on credit card purchases, pharmacy records, library records, firearm sales records, financial information, and a range of other sensitive subjects. And the bulk collection authority could potentially be used to supersede bans on maintaining gun owner databases, or laws protecting the privacy of medical records, financial records, and records of book and movie purchases.”

The letter directly asks James Clapper, the Director of National Intelligence, if the NSA collected data about gun owners and firearm purchases to create a database. It’s a bit strange, though – the letter points out that the NSA could have used the Patriot Act to create a database on just about anything, including a database about medical procedures or one that tracks what people buy. Why are the senators specifically asking about a gun database? Do they know something and have reason to believe that the NSA is tracking gun owners?

They might simply be asking the question because a national gun registry is a likely candidate for the overstepping NSA. Gun control advocates have been attempting to form a national database for years, but they’ve been unable to push a bill through Congress. The NSA may have gotten around that insurmountable obstacle with a creative interpretation of the Patriot Act.

The ongoing investigation of the NSA may reveal just how far the NSA stepped over its bounds. But with the Obama Administration defending the NSA and Edward Snowden MIA, a complete Congressional investigation may be the only thing that pulls the truth out of the NSA.
