A 5-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his 2-year-old sister with a .22-caliber rifle Tuesday afternoon in Cumberland County, Kentucky, according to state police. The gun was a youth-model rifle given to the boy as a gift last year.
"It's a Crickett," said Cumberland County Coroner Gary White. "It's a little rifle for a kid ... The little boy's used to shooting the little gun."
The children’s mother was home when the shooting took place. The girl, who White identified as Caroline Starks, was taken to Cumberland County Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
White said the death will be ruled accidental. He said the gun was usually kept in a corner and the family did not know that a shell had been left in it.
Crickett Firearms manufacturers youth rifles under the logo My First Rifle™. They sell both traditional youth .22 rifles and those colored bright pink, blue, and multi-color red, white and blue.
"Just one of those crazy accidents," White said.
