A 4-year-old boy in Toms River, N.J., accidentally shot his 6-year-old neighbor in the head with a rifle on Monday.

The gun went off at 7 p.m. while the boys were playing in the 4-year-old’s yard. The 6-year-old, who was rushed to the emergency room, is listed in stable condition and is expected to recover.

Toms River Police Sgt. Robert Rankin said they still don’t know how the 4-year-old obtained the rifle. The boy’s parents were at home at the time of the accident. It is unclear if the gun is registered to either of them.

Investigators are also not sure if the rifle went off or if the boy pulled the trigger. His mother called 911 immediately after the incident.

The names of the two boys have not been released.
