| by Michael Allen

A grandmother in Bowie County, Texas, opened fire on an armed burglar on New Year's Day (video below).

Rebbie Roberson told KSLA she was about to watch the station's evening newscast when a masked man broke into her home:

So I had to walk right out in front of him. I didn't know if he was going to kill me or what.

And when I started to get up, he was in here on me with a gun facing me right to my face.

I reached over there and grabbed this gun. And when I did I swerved around, and I pointed it at him, and when I did, he ran.

The 74-year-old woman recalled firing shots at the would-be robber as she chased him through her home, which had bullet holes:

I'm not sure I didn't hit him. I don't know yet. I sure tried. I sure was hoping. That was the scare of my life ... I tried to kill him. Anybody break in on me, I'm going to kill them. He's going to kill me or I'm going to kill him.

"It could have been worse for both individuals, both the victim and the suspect," Bowie County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Jeff Neal said. He also noted, "Every citizen, according to the Texas penal code, has the right to defend themselves and their family."

There were also 2,491 home invasions, 1,881 incidents of self-defense with guns, and 2,183 accidental shootings.

The site does not count gun-related suicides, which average 22,000 each year.
