A 53-year-old man only identified by his first name, Dennis, was fueling up his motorcycle at a gas station in Cobb County, Georgia, when the tank overflowed and the bike backfired.

Dennis was engulfed in flames and bystander Billy Houston leaped into action, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. He rushed to Dennis and used his sweater to quell the flames, forcing him to stop drop and roll. “I was trying to help him. There was plenty of screaming, panicking. He was on fire,” Houston told WSBTV.

Another man, who has not been identified, also jumped in to help. Houston held Dennis’ hands until medics arrived.

Dennis was airlifted to Grady Hospital and Houston was treated for burns on his arms and hands at Wellstar Cobb Hospital, WSBTV reported.

“They saved this man’s life. Had he fallen down in that or spent much more time in there… he didn’t appear to have any burns to his airway or face. Had they not gotten him out of there and left him in there, he certainly could have done that,” Cobb County Battalion Chief David Blount said.

Investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire, but warned others not to leave their motors running while gassing up. It’s not clear what Dennis’ condition is.
