A 10-year-old girl was struck and killed by a car after pushing a 2-year-old girl out of the way, saving her life.

Kiera Larsen is being remembered by family, friends, and neighbors as a hero after being killed while saving another child from getting struck by a car.

According to authorities, Kiera was outside of her family’s home, playing with her friends and siblings, when a parked Mercedes began rolling down a sloped driveway toward the children.

When Kiera saw the car rolling down the driveway, she reportedly pushed a 2-year-old girl out of its path, saving her life but being struck by the car herself.

Kiera was rushed to San Diego’s Grossmont Hospital, where she later died.

“A child died heroically, I mean if you think about it, she sacrificed herself for another small child,” California Highway Patrol Officer Kevin Pearlstein told Fox 5, “We’re going to do an inspection on the vehicle, find out why this happened, find out if there was some sort of malfunction on the vehicle and go from there.”

Alissa Jenkins, the mother of two-year-old Emma and one-year-old Adison, who were saved by Kiera, said that the 10-year-old is “truly a hero.”

“She saved both my daughters’ lives,” Jenkins said. “These are my two kids that I have and both of them could’ve been gone in an instant and she stepped in and took over and did what she knows best to do - and that’s to protect those around her.”

Kiera’s neighbors, devastated by the loss, set up a GoFundMe page for her family.

“We’ve all just rallied together as a neighborhood just to be there and do whatever we can for them,” Terra Ennis told NBC San Diego. “We love them very much. There’s not a lot we can really say or do so we’re just here for them.”
