Donald Trump surrogate and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich had words of advice for the Republican presidential nominee.
Gingrich believes Trump’s candidacy can prevail if he turns his rhetoric into actions, according to an interview with The New York Times published on Oct. 3.
“He has gotten himself to the edge of the mountain, he can get himself to the top of the mountain, but to do that he has to be willing to make real change,” Gingrich said.
Gingrich noted that Trump faces one of the most important weeks ahead in his campaign.

“He has to decide that the presidency is worth drilling into,” Gingrich continued. “With the possible exception of Eisenhower, nobody in modern times has become president without" significantly changing their campaign style.
As of Oct. 3, Trump trailed Clinton in national polls by 2.5 percentage points, notes Real Clear Politics. Furthermore, Five Thirty Eight’s forecast gives Hillary a 66.9 percent change of winning the Nov. 8 election, and Trump a 33.1 percent.
“I really want him to understand that he can win this,” Gingrich concluded, according to The New York Times. “He is the one person who can beat him -- not Hillary.”
Gingrich was previously on Trump’s short-list for vice presidential pick.

“He clearly, I think, is down to two,” Gingrich told Fox News in July about Trump’s final decision on a running mate, notes The Hill. Trump ultimately chose Indiana governor Mike Pence as his VP.
“In many ways, Donald Trump is like a pirate,” Gingrich later added. "He’s outside the normal system, he gets things done, he’s bold, he’s actually like a figure out of a movie. And in a lot of ways, my entire career has been a little like a pirate. I’ve taken on the establishment in both parties. I’ve been very prepared to fight the media."
