Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich blasted an ABC News/Washington Post poll, saying it is biased against presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump and should be retracted.

"The Washington Post poll has her tying with Trump with men. Now the odds against that happening are so great that even given the total bias of The Washington Post and the degree to which they're now committing a hatchet job on Trump, I think some sense of professional dignity should have led them either to withdraw the poll or redesign it," Gingrich told "Fox & Friends," according to Politico.

And Trump took to Twitter to criticize the poll.

"The @ABC poll sample is heavy on Democrats. Very dishonest - why would they do that? Other polls good!"

Trump is correct about the poll having more Democrat respondents. According to the methodology description of the poll, which was conducted by Langer Associates, the partisan breakdown was 36 percent Democrat, 24 percent Republican and 33 percent independents.

"The 'dirty' poll done by @ABC @washingtonpost is a disgrace. Even they admit that many more Democrats were polled. Other polls were good," Trump tweeted.

Gingrich, who has been rumored to be a potential vice presidential pick, said the onslaught of negative media attention for Trump was the result of a biased media, and claimed that the businessman's more positive results in other polls showed he had strength going into the general election.

"It's an absurdity,” Gingrich said. “Trump is down about by 5 or 6 points after several weeks in which the elite media have done everything they can to block him and to protect Hillary. This is natural in a right-left race. [former President Ronald] Reagan had the same problems. By the end of the summer, people will start sifting through it. If Trump is still standing on the Friday before the election, she will lose by a huge margin."
