Learning a few surprising things about a new boyfriend or girlfriend is a standard part of a relationship. But learning something this surprising definitely doesn’t happen too often.
U.K. woman Charlotte Urie, 20, told MailOnline this week that her beloved boyfriend, Kieran Moloney, 23, was actually born a girl.
“I would never have guessed Kieran's secret, but as soon as he told me he'd been born a girl it didn't matter to me,” Urie said. “I was surprised, but I love him for who he is and see him as a man.”
You’d never guess anything about Moloney’s past either. His muscular physique and facial hair conceal any remnants of his past identity. Moloney told MailOnline he was deeply unsatisfied with being a girl for as long as he can remember.

“Kids didn't understand why I was different,” Moloney said. “I had no friends and I changed schools five times. The only time I was happy was when people mistook me for a boy. I hated seeing my breasts develop and I was jealous of the boys at school when their voices dropped and they started shaving. I hated being a girl.”
At age 16, Moloney started taking testosterone tablets and working out vigorously soon after. At 20 years old, he had a double mastectomy.
“When I saw the results, I felt euphoric,” Moloney said. “I finally had a man’s upper body – something I’d only dreamed about.”
Moloney was wracked with nerves when he decided to tell Urie, whom he’d only been dating for a month at the time, his secret. Her response was everything he dreamed it would be.
“Kieran sat me down and said he had something to tell me,” Urie said. “He then blurted out that he'd been born a girl called Ciara. I was so surprised. He was so manly. I never had any suspicions. We talked it through for hours. I knew I still loved him and wanted to be with him. It didn't matter he'd been born a girl.”
Fast forward to now, and their relationship is as strong as ever. Their future plans include marriage and children.
“Kieran's my soulmate, and we'd be the best parents,” Urie says. “We'll explain his background to our kids when they're old enough. They'll have two loving parents – that's the most important thing.”
