At an “America in Distress” Tea Party rally in Dallas on July 2, Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert accused President Barack Obama of prosecuting those who believe homosexuality is wrong with hate crimes.
Gohmert argued that Obama’s pursuance of those who disagree with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality is an attack on religion. He said that the Obama administration has made it clear that they are untouchable, and that they are “coming after” Christianity.
As Christians and opponents of LGBT equality Gohmert argued that they are lovers, not haters deserving to be charged with hate crimes.
Gohmert questioned believers of evolution, asking how two males mating could evolve the human species. His question was responded with by laughter from the audience.

In 2010, when the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Bill was being considered, Gohmert said the prosecution of such crimes would lead to Nazism, the legalization of necrophilia and bestiality.
Gohmert is an extremely vocal opponent of gay marriage and other LGBT rights. He criticized the Supreme Court’s overruling of DOMA in June, even suggesting that it would lead to polygamy. He has often claimed that Obama is intolerant of Christians, especially in the military.
In one of his strangest debates, Gohmert rambled on about asparagus, with a recording catching the phrase: “casting aspersions on my asparagus.”
