Mich. RNC Dave Agema: Gays Want Free Health Benefits Because They're Dying of AIDS

Michigan Republican National Committeeman Dave Agema said last week that gay individuals are pushing for health care reform because they are dying of AIDS.

According to LGBTQ Nation, while speaking against marriage equality at a Berrien County Republican Party Holiday Reception on Dec. 5, Agema told attendees that gays claim people with AIDS as their lovers in order to beat the system and get free medical benefits.

“Folks, [gay people] want free medical because they’re dying [when they’re] between 30 and 44 years old,” he said. “To me, it’s a moral issue. It’s a Biblical issue. Traditional marriage is where it should be and it’s in our platform. Those in our party who oppose traditional marriage are wrong.”

Equality Michigan, a statewide LGBT advocacy group, has asked Republican leadership to condemn Agema’s comments and demands his resignation. The group is also encouraging the healthcare community to call out Agema’s remarks to erase harmful stigmas associated with HIV.

“It is unconscionable that in 2013 a political figure in a prominent position would feel so comfortable spewing lies about real people in a pathetic attempt to deny fundamental rights to families in Michigan,” said Emily Dievendorf, Managing Director of Equality Michigan.

“The HIV crisis should not be used to scare and divide Michiganders when our only route to overcoming the crisis is to eliminate the stigma surrounding HIV by having more frequent and accurate conversations about public health,” she said.

Towleroad reported that, earlier this year, Agema made controversy over remarks posted on Facebook about the U.S. Supreme Court marriage arguments, saying that gays are sexually promiscuous, rife with sexually transmitted diseases, and responsible for “half the murders in large cities” and cautioned that homosexuals were indoctrinating children in schools.

The article, titled “Everyone Should Know These Statistics On Homosexuals,” cites studies from the 1980s and features high medical insurance rates to caring for people living with AIDS.
