| by Kathryn Schroeder

A Madera, California, Nortenos gang member allegedly shot and killed one of his own by mistake because he was wearing the wrong colors.

Andrew Chavez, 21, allegedly shot and killed Michael Sanchez, a fellow member of the Nortenos gang, on June 26, according to the Madera Police Department, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The Nortenos gang identifies itself with the color red, according to The Mercury News.

Sanchez was wearing the colors of a rival gang when Chavez fatally shot him, the Los Angeles Times reports.

“We would like to extend our condolences to the family of the victim,” police said in a statement. “I hope that the efforts taken by our officers gives some closure to the family as they grieve the loss of their loved one.”

Authorities describe Sanchez’s murder as being committed “in cold blood.”

Chavez was arrested on June 29 for suspicion of murder and committing a criminal offense to promote a street gang, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Chavez, who was on probation for running away from police while holding an AK-47 assault rifle, is being held on more than $1 million bail.
