House Freedom Caucus Member: The Swamp Drained Trump

| by Ray Brown

Republican Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan said President Donald Trump has become part of the establishment the president railed against as a candidate during the 2016 presidential election.

"It didn't take long for the swamp to drain [Trump]," tweeted Amash, referring to the president's campaign promise to "drain the swamp" of the political elite in Washington, D.C.

"No shame, Mr. President. Almost everyone succumbs to the D.C. Establishment," Amash added.

Amash, a member of the Republican Party's libertarian-leaning Freedom Caucus, tweeted his slight to Trump after the president said the Freedom Caucus would be a threat to the GOP going forward into the 2018 midterm elections.

"The Freedom Caucus will hurt the entire Republican agenda if they don't get on the team, & fast. We must fight them, & Dems, in 2018!" the president tweeted.

That tweet came three days after Trump blasted the Freedom Caucus for throwing a wrench into the mainstream GOP's plans to pass a health care bill to replace the Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as Obamacare.

"The Republican House Freedom Caucus was able to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. After so many bad years they were ready for a win!" Trump wrote.

"Democrats are smiling in D.C. that the Freedom Caucus, with the help of Club For Growth and Heritage, have saved Planned Parenthood & Ocare!" Trump also tweeted.

According to Politico, Republicans were 25 votes shy of being able to pass the American Health Care Act, the GOP's alternative to the ACA. And of the Freedom Caucus' 36 members, 28 vowed to vote against it. As a result, the bill was pulled and the vote never took place.

"This is a defining moment for our nation, but it's also a defining moment for the Freedom Caucus," said Freedom Caucus leader Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina one week before the scheduled vote. "I don't think there's a more critical vote for the Freedom Caucus than this."

The Freedom Caucus has already felt the wrath of Trump's in his tweets, but fellow House Republicans have also criticized the group.

"How can [Freedom Caucus members] go back and face their constituents if they’re the reason we didn’t get the most significant entitlement reform in a generation, if they’re the reason we didn’t keep our promise for repealing Obamacare?" said Republican Rep. Richard Hudson of North Carolina just before House Majority Leader Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin canceled the health care legislation vote. "It defies to me to understand where they’re coming from."
