| by Lina Batarags

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – On Saturday night, a teenager was killed while trying to stop his drunk friend from driving.

According to police, 19-year-old Joe Ianzano had just returned home from a country music concert. In an attempt to stop a drunk friend from driving home, Ianzano was clinging to the rear spoiler of the friend’s high-performance car. The car careened through the bushes and slammed into a palm tree, sending Ianzano flying forward and over the car.

After hitting the tree, the car drove across a driveway and hit three more cars before finally coming to a stop.

Ianzano was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It was a courageous act, but Joey was like that,” said his grandmother, Barbara Ianzano. “Joey would put himself on the line. He would do things like that. This time, he was too courageous.”

Ianzano’s family said that Joe was a hunter and an athlete who loved his truck and was willing to give his life to do the right thing. He had been about to start school to become a firefighter.

His friend Cassandra Persaud said, “I am really sorry that his family had to see this. He did not deserve it, and I loved him a lot.”

A memorial was held for Ianzano on Monday evening.
