Police in North Miami, Florida, shot an unarmed black male therapist who was trying to help his autistic patient in the middle of a street on July 18 (video below).
Charles Kinsey had his arms in the air while trying to talk down the unidentified patient, who ran away from a group home and was blocking traffic.
Kinsey recalled the incident to WSVN from his hospital bed: "I’m going to the ground just like this here with my hands up. And I am laying down here just like this, and I’m telling them again, 'Sir, there is no need for firearms. I’m unarmed, he’s an autistic guy. He got a toy truck in his hand.'"
On the cellphone video Kinsey tells police: "All he has is a toy truck. A toy truck. I am a behavior therapist at a group home."

In addition to trying to calm the police down, Kinsey advised the autistic young man: "Rinaldo, please be still, Rinaldo. Sit down, Rinaldo. Lay on your stomach."
The cellphone video doesn't show the actual shooting, but it was later confirmed by the police.
Kinsey said he asked an officer why he shot him, and the cop said, "I don't know."
After Kinsey was shot, he said that the police did not immediately render aid: "They cuffed my hands, and they flipped me over, and I’m laying on the concrete like this right here, I'm bleeding."

According to the North Miami Police Department, there was a 911 call about a man with a gun who was threatening to take his own life, which was not the actual scenario.
Local activists want to know if the officer will be charged with a crime.
The Washington Post reports that the police department did not respond to questions, but did say that the officer was placed on administrative leave, which is standard during an investigation involving a shooting.
The police department did not say why the officer fired his weapon on an unarmed man who had his hands up.
