Florida man John Andrew Welden pleaded guilty Monday to tricking his pregnant ex-girlfriend into taking a pill that caused her to have a miscarriage.

In March of 2013, Welden forged his father’s signature on a prescription for Cytotec, and relabeled the pill bottle as “amoxicillin.”

Welden then delivered the drug, which is used to induce labor, to his ex-girlfriend Remee Jo Lee, claiming that his father had instructed him to deliver the drug that would cure a falsely diagnosed infection.

Six weeks into her pregnancy, Lee went to the hospital after feeling severe cramps and pain, and shortly thereafter miscarried.

This judge looked an inmate square in the eyes and did something that left the entire courtroom in tears:

Prosecutors had planned to convict Welden of murder and sentence him to life in jail under the “Unborn Victims of Violence Act”, though they dropped the charge when he signed a plea agreement.

In the plea agreement, Walden admitted to forging his father’s signature and pinpointed a co-conspirator in his plan.

“Whenever a woman is robbed of her ability to give birth and have a child, I don’t think there’s any greater harm you can cause somebody,” Lee’s attorney Gil Sanchez said, noting that his client is devastated.

Welden will be sentenced on December 5 on charges of tampering with a consumer product and conspiracy to commit mail fraud.

The plea agreement recommends that he be sentenced to 13 years and 8 months in a low-security federal prison camp as punishment.
