A man from Boca Raton, Florida, was arrested for allegedly leaving a 4-year-old boy in a hot car while he went into a store to purchase a bottle of vodka on Sunday.

Antonio Macaluso, 47, was arrested on Sunday night and charged with child neglect after police say he left the child unattended in a hot car for 13 minutes while he shopped for vodka at the Total Wine store on Town Center Circle, reports Palm Beach Post.

A couple reportedly noticed the child alone in the Mini Cooper and called police shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday. Macaluso had turned off the engine of the car and had left the window slightly cracked open. Police say the temperature outside at the time was 95 degrees.

Macaluso reportedly admitted to police that he "made a big mistake." The relationship between the man and young boy isn't clear, but the Department of Children and Families is now responsible for placing him somewhere safe.

Incidents involving parents leaving children in cars while they run errands or go to work have been treated as criminal acts in recent years. Perhaps the most famous and notorious case involves Justin Ross Harris, a Georgia father who has been indicted on felony murder after police say he purposely left his 22-month-old son to die in a car. Authorities say they have evidence that Harris performed Internet searches on how to kill a child in a hot car and had left his son in the vehicle while he sexted with numerous women and sent an underage girl a photo of his penis.
