Kurdish Fighter Blows Herself Up When She's Captured By ISIS

| by Lisa Fogarty

Rather than surrendering to ISIS, a captured female Kurdish soldier detonated a bomb, killing herself and several Islamic State fighters.

The incident took place in the key Syrian town of Kobane on Sunday night, reports The Telegraph, when Arin Mirkan reportedly realized the area had been surrounded by jihadists and that she was inevitably going to be taken as a prisoner – or worse.

As members of ISIS attempted to capture Mirkan, she reportedly set off a bomb that killed her and an undetermined number of militants, reports Inquisitr.

Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, confirmed that Mirkan is the first female Kurdish fighter to carry out a suicide bombing against ISIS. According to sources, she was a mother of two children – though little else is known about her at this time.

Other Kurdish fighters, with the help of U.S.-led air strikes, have been fighting against ISIS militants for control of the town, which borders with Turkey. Although jihadists were slowed down in their effort to gain control of Kobane, local officials say air strikes alone are not enough to prevent them from overtaking cities and capturing residents.

ISIS reportedly first began moving toward Kobane on Sept. 16., which prompted as many as 186,000 people residing along the Syria-Turkey border to flee to its neighboring country. Last week, Turkey’s government agreed to allow the United States and its allies – which now include Britain and France – to use its territory to help in the fight, but have so far not agreed to become active participants in the war.
