| by Mackenzie Fleming

A 23-year-old woman has been charged with murder after an apparent attempted suicide last month. Karri Benoir, of Barre, Vermont, is said to have intentionally driven into oncoming traffic on July 30, causing a fatal crash.

In an alleged attempt to kill herself, Benoir crossed the grassy median on Interstate 80 in the town of Richmond, New York, and collided with two other vehicles. Benoir, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from her 2004 Toyota Corolla. She was discovered near the crash with serious injuries, Daily Mail reported

The man in another car, 30-year-old father of three, Brendon Cousino had been wearing a seatbelt and was “heavily entrapped” in his car after the wreck, NECN reported. He was found dead behind the wheel.

Cousino, who worked as an EMT, had been on his way to pick up a birthday cake for his eldest daughter who was turning 9 that weekend when he was hit by Benoir, Daily Mail reported.

Benior is now facing a second-degree murder charge the death of Cousino.

Badly injured in the crash, Benior was taken to the University of Vermont Medical Center, where police say she will be arraigned if she is not well enough to make it to court.

Benior was said to have had a history of problems throughout her life, which she detailed in a 2013 commencement speech at Community College of Vermont. “Just two years ago, I faced poverty and homelessness,” she told graduates. “I struggled with mental illness and a lot of instability in my life.”

A cousin of Cousino’s created an online fundraiser on GoFundMe to help the family. The page had accumulated more than $48,000 in donations in a week.

“How do you face life without your best friend in the whole world?” His wife Heidi said in a post on the GoFundMe page.

“How do I raise these girls without his silly influence and rock steady support? I will miss him with every breath and every heartbeat.”
