The daughter of Eric Garner, the Staten Island man killed by police this past summer, appeared at the New York Police Memorial on Monday to offer her condolences to the families of NYPD officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu. Liu and Ramos were ambushed and murdered this past weekend out of alleged revenge for the killing of Garner.
“I just had to come out and let their family know that we stand with them, and I’m going to send my prayers and condolences to all the families who are suffering through this tragedy,” Emerald Garner told ABC News. “I was never anti-police. Like I said before, I have family that’s in the NYPD that I’ve grown up around, family reunions and everything so my family you know, we’re not anti-police."
The murder of Ramos and Liu came as tensions between civilians and police were at a high following a number of high-profile deaths at the hands of law enforcement. Grand jury decisions not to indict the officers responsible for the deaths of Garner in New York and Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, had resulted in protests throughout the country, some leading to riots.
Saturday’s brutal shooting happened just before 3 p.m. in Brooklyn. 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Brinsley reportedly traveled from Baltimore specifically to “put wings on pigs,” as he wrote in an Instagram post that preceded the killing. Just five minutes before the shooting, Baltimore police faxed the NYPD a warning that Brinsley, whom they considered dangerous, was possibly headed to Brooklyn to exact revenge on the NYPD for Garner’s death.

Officers Ramos and Liu were on duty and sitting in their car when Brinsley ambushed and shot them without warning. Both officers were fatally shot without even having the chance to reach for their weapons in defense. After the shooting occurred, Brinsley fled the scene and ran into a nearby subway, where he turned the gun on himself and took his own life.
